Christian Life

Introduction

Here you will find the short essays on Christian life that appeared earlier on the main page.

Chirst has died. Chist is risen. Chirst will come again.

Prayer

Do you remember to keep prayer as part of your daily life?

I know that I do not always remember that prayer is there to turn to. I mean more than saying “Oh Christ” when something bad happens. I am talking about really stopping for a moment and concentrating on praying to God. You can do it while walking to work, sitting at your desk, and yes even before meals. God Listens.

If you have that kernel of faith in the Lord Jesus, that little mustard seed of faith [Math 13] then your prayer will be heard and acted upon. God is present as we walk, when we are joyful as well as when we are sad. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice and Gods grace and forgiveness we can turn to him in prayer. We just have to remember to do so.

This sounds kind of trite doesn’t it? But if you go to church every Sunday or not, many of us forget our faith on weekdays. We get absorbed in the world around us and forget that God will listen to our prayers here too. All we need is a little nudge to remind us.

Signs

Do you wear a cross? Is it on our lapel or on a chain for the world to see? Can others see in what you do and how you act that you have been touched by Christ? Have you yourself seen others who have reminded you what it means to be a Christian? Have you had the opportunity to bring Christ into your conversation with your non-church friends because they knew you were a Christian? We need to remember that we are Christians so that we may be signs to others. Perhaps to remind others that they too can turn to God. Sometimes all it takes is a small sign and you never know where it will come from. It may be you.

Message of Easter 2002

Chirst has died. Chist is risen. Chirst will come again.

I am a Christian but how do I live as a Christian?

This is a question that is often asked and each answer varies with the individual but here are a few suggestions:

Pray and Read the Bible Daily. Practice these daily devotions alone or with your family but do not neglect the power of prayer and reflection. We would suggest that you use a guide such as the 2 year lectionary or other source to help you through the bible. If you try to start reading the bible at the begining, with Genisis, you will likely get hung up on the begats and other long lists. That is why a book to guide you is helpful. A favorite guide of mine is called For All the Saints. It includes the daily Bible readings, suggested opening and closing prayers and a short non Biblical passage relevant to the text. It is a four volume work that covers the bible in two years.

Prayer is essential in the life of a Chiristain. If you think you do not know how to pray, start with the Lord's Prayer. Say it whenever you need God's presence as well as part of your daily devotions. The important part of prayer is remembering that you are conversing with God and God is there and listening. You need to give prayer some respect but any words will do if your heart is in the prayer.

Attend Church regularly. We attend Church because we are comanded to worship God and we put no other god before the triune God. This means money, soccer practice or the morning paper are not more important than church. When we become Christians we are freed of our sins through Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us, but we also accept that we now carry the cross of Christ and serve and worship the Lord. At church we learn more about God through formal classes and through hearing God's word proclaimed. We partake of Christ through holy communion. And we join a community of freinds and family in our church who will help us in our Christian journey.

Baptized we live to serve Christ and struggle with his commands. We will have doubts. We will feel empty at times. We will stumble and fall, but Christ will be there for us, Christ has already been there for us when he ascended to the cross.

If you have gotten this far in the text stop right now and say a prayer asking that God strengthen and guide you on your path as a Christain in today's world.

-Ea.
